We receive the information that will shape our thought patterns through the five senses. These thought patterns, in turn, will affect our emotions. Which ultimately determines our choices and behaviour. So, the challenge to protect your eyes is real!
Therefore, one of the most powerful of the five senses is sight. Whatever you expose your eyes to will affect some areas of your life. It is a daily challenge to be selective in what a person chooses to see.
Growing up, my parents never allowed us to read or watch anything violent, scary or sexually explicit. Because they were protecting us from the effects of such content on our minds and behaviour, maybe some of you had the same experience growing up. So, your parents had the challenge to protect your eyes.
However, as we grow up and start exploring the world and making choices for ourselves, these choices may expose us to harmful or destructive content. Therefore, the scriptures say
“He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil…” Isa 33:15
So, an important question we should ask ourselves is, “how healthy are my viewing choices”? It is good to become aware of what you expose yourself to on TV, in magazines, in newspapers and on social media platforms. And think about how this content affects your thoughts, decisions and actions.
“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; give me life in your ways.” Psalm 119: 37
Therefore, may this be our prayer; that the Lord would always remind us through His Holy Spirit to turn our eyes away from looking at wicked things. And to focus on the wonderfulness of the Lord! We will find life in His ways as we choose what we expose our minds to. Everything in the Bible is written so we can have peace and wholeness in Him. So, even if it is challenging to protect your eyes, you will feel the difference in your heart.
Blessings of grace and love
