The Apostle Luke describes the arrival of Jesus Christ into the world as a “dawn” visiting the earth: “Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:78-79).
The word “Dayspring” is an Archaic term for “dawn of the morning” (Easton Bible Dictionary). It means “The beginning of the day” – 1. in Archaic, dawn is the beginning of the day. 2. the beginning of a new era or order of things (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).
Jesus goes into the dark spaces.
When Jesus walked on earth in the first century, He entered the darkest places in people’s lives. He went into the lives of persons suffering from leprosy: a woman with seven demons, a woman caught in adultery, a grieving father who lost his daughter, a family at a funeral, blind people, and so many other dark moments in individuals’ worlds. “…They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick”. We are all “sick” (because of the Fall) in need of a Redeemer to heal, restore, forgive, and give peace. Jesus Christ is our Healer and Saviour.
Today, Jesus is still going into the dark corners of people’s lives: the hopelessness, the broken relationship, the grief, the illness, the financial worries, the divorce, the betrayal, the childhood trauma and (you name your darkness). As Jesus walks into our dark spaces, He sheds light with His love, power, truth and grace.
How do you let the Light shine on your life?
- Know, believe and follow the Light: Jesus Christ is the Light that came into the world to chase away the darkness. Do you know Him, believe in and follow Him? “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
- Understand the Light: Learn how to walk in the light by reading and meditating on the Word daily: “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
- Walk in the Light: “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8). The word “walk” in this verse means to behave in a certain manner, to conduct ourselves as children of God, in righteousness and truth (see verse 9).
Child of God – Your motivation and invitation to shine!
If you know, believe and follow Jesus Christ, as you reflect His light, you are a light that shines in the darkness.
So, this is your invitation: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
And this is your motivation: “Ye are all the children of Light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness” (1 Thessalonians 5:5).
