An identity crisis causes a person to question their sense of self in this world. Many people in this world do not know who they are. And many children of God don’t realize who they are. What is the truth about your identity?
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
Identity Crisis
Often, a child of God who does not live out their identity as Christ experiences an identity crisis. Which means not knowing your sense of self in Christ or your place in the community of believers.
People often find identity in family, friends, money, beauty, weight, sexuality, education, social media likes/followers, etc.
But what happens if I lose any of these? Do I stop being?
The Truth About Your Identity
In Christ, you are who God you are. The New Testament contains beautiful scriptures telling us who we are as His new creations in Christ. But do you know who you are? Or are you still bound to your old self(before Christ)?
It would be best to find your true self in your new identity. Therefore, in your quiet time with the Lord, I want to encourage you to read the Book of Ephesians. The letter to the Ephesians has two parts. The first part from chapters 1 to 3 tells you who you are in Christ. The second part from chapters 4-6 tells you how to live out who you are in Christ.
Some truths you will find in the letter to the Ephesians:
- I am redeemed and forgiven in Christ (Eph 1:7)
- I am reconciled to God through the cross of Jesus Christ (Eph 2:16).
- I am a partaker of the promises of God in Christ (Eph 3:6).
- My life displays the glory of God (Eph 3:21).
Freedom from Your Past
Thus, when He adopts us, He restores us. And He also transforms us from an old self to a new self in Christ. It does not happen overnight because we did not form our old identity overnight. Because of faulty beliefs, family hurt, life traumas, etc… we need to find wholeness.
We receive so many messages at home, school, in relationships, through the media, etc… and these messages shape our belief systems and, as a result, our identities.
But, unfortunately, these messages become clothes we put on and wear daily. First, we believed them, and now they are so part of our identity we can’t move on free in Christ.
It is time to “take off” the old identity and “put on” a new one! This is where counselling has the potential to impact your life. Not only does it help you finish with the past, but it also starts a new future. You can find your unique identity and heal from the remnants of your past. Ultimately, that is God’s desire for you, child of God!
Blessings and love,
